Wilmington Island is one of several barrier islands off the coast of Savannah, Georgia known as the Back Barrier Islands. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Wilmington Island was a rural farming area accessible only by boat that supplied crops-primarily indigo and cotton- to the booming city of Savannah. The acclaimed farm of Dr. Arminius Oemler on Wilmington Island was known throughout the state and he also became a well-known promoter of the oyster industry in Georgia. Such was the typical fare for more than a hundred years.

In 1893, the Wilmington Island Pleasure and Improvement Company started a summer community on the south end. More resort development followed in 1927 with the Hotel Wilmington Island (later called the General Oglethorpe), a popular destination for golf. Now known as the Wilmington Island Club, the golf course was recently updated to remain consistent to its original Donald Ross design.

The Par 71, 18 hole championship course provides a very fine, fair test of golf: not overly difficult but a true challenge. Throughout the years, the course has hosted a USGA Amateur Open, The Georgia Open and other local and state golfing events.

The Club has a long, storied past including one of Savannah’s great urban legends revolving around the Teamster’s and Jimmy Hoffa. Today the elegant building is restored as condominiums and stands as the tallest building in Chatham County.
